“Trapped in America’s Safety Net”

Speaker: Andrea Louise Cambell, Professor of Political Science, MIT

Social policy scholar Andrea Louise Campbell thought she knew how government health programs operate. Then a car accident left her sister-in-law a quadriplegic, dependent on means-tested social assistance.  Combining personal narrative and policy analysis, Campbell shares what she’s learned about how American social policy actually works on the ground, from its incredible complexity to cross-state variation, from yawning gaps to policy designs that keep people mired in poverty.  She will discuss what the Affordable Care Act does and doesn’t accomplish as well as prospects for broader reform.
