Eitan Hersh writes in the Boston Globe about the rise of political hobbying and how participation in politics has changed over the years because of a combination of factors. In the Globe article “The Most Dangerous Hobby” he writes:

“Political activity has become a hobby. Voting, petitioning, partisan cheering, donating, watching infotainment news: The chief purpose for participating in politics seems to be self-gratification.”

He looks at the role of wealthy donors and political activists: 

“Campaigning involves competition. Policy involves compromise,” he says.
