“A Company of Scholars, a Society of Friends”

As inaugural festivities grace our campus, ISPS congratulates Peter Salovey—a longtime affiliate of the Institution—for his leadership not only within the university but also within the social sciences. Salovey’s illustrious history at Yale dovetails with his sustained, fruitful collaboration with ISPS as a psychologist conducting pioneering research using field experiments.

We are proud to link to a paper he wrote in 1994 for American Behavioral Scientist stating the case for field experimentation in psychology and other areas of the social sciences, “especially in those disciplines, such as political science, where experiments have not been the primary method of scholarship.”

On acceptance of the presidency, President Salovey quoted historian George W. Pierson, “Yale is at once a tradition, a company of scholars, a society of friends.” We at ISPS feel privileged to have supported his scholarship and enjoyed his friendship—and we look forward to the company and society he will build in the years ahead.
