Abstract: Does mass polarization reduce electoral accountability for anti-democratic behavior? We derive and test predictions from a simple model of candidate choice and test them in a candidate choice experiment. We find that when respondents perceive larger policy differences between hypothetical candidates, they are less likely to defect from a candidate who violates democratic norms.
Matthew H. Graham is a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Political Science. His research focuses on mass polarization and beliefs about politically-relevant facts.
