New Survey of Public Opinion on Policy Issues in Genetics

ISPS Faculty Affiliate, Rene Almeling, Professor of Sociology, and co-author Shana Gadarian, published a new paper in Genetics in Medicine. The paper is based on a new public opinion survey of Americans’ attitudes toward genetic testing.  Results from the survey found that there is widespread support for federal funding of genetic research and for laws protecting people from genetic discrimination. A surprising amount, 65% of respondents, want doctors involved in interpreting the the Direct -to-Consumer genetic test kits (the DNA spit tests).

“In the ongoing debates over policy issues in genetics, it’s important to keep in mind the views of those most affected by such debates,” said Almeling.
