"Challenges to Survey Quality: Professional Respondents, Nonresponse, and Measurement Error"

Abstract: There is broad recognition that survey research is facing increasing methodological challenges.  People are harder to reach and when you reach them they are less likely to answer survey questions. At same time, new technologies have dramatically lowered costs for some types of survey methods (especially opt-in web surveys), resulting in a proliferation of new data. More than ever before, we cannot take the quality of survey data for granted. In this talk, I present results from two recent projects focused on various aspects of survey quality: The first examines "professional" respondents in the 2010 CCES.  The second examines panel attrition in the ANES and GSS.
