The East African Coffee Initiative: A Partnership Between the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and TechnoServe.”

David Browning directs TechnoServe’s coffee initiative. In 2008, TechnoServe received a four year, $47 million grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to work with small-scale coffee farmers in East Africa, helping them to increase their incomes by improving the quality of their coffee and linking them to potential buyers. Mr. Browning will present the highlights of the project exploring the East African specialty coffee industry. including challenges and opportunities for smallholder farmers.

TechnoServe is a non-profit organization focused on solving poverty in developing countries. David previously served as TechnoServe’s Regional Director for Latin America and Vice President for Business Development. Prior to joining TechnoServe in 2003, David worked for McKinsey and Company, a management consulting firm. Before McKinsey, David held a range of managerial positions in the manufacturing, petroleum, and retail industries. David holds an M.B.A. from Yale University, as well as a Bachelor’s degree in Marketing, and a Master’s degree in Advanced Finance from the University of New South Wales in Sydney, Australia.
