ISPS Scholars’ Commentary on the Baltimore Riots

The online platform The Conversation asked scholars to comment on the implications of the Baltimore riots. Vesla Weaver (Assistant Professor of Political Science and African American Studies) writes “In America, Democracy is Not a Universal Experience” that  government policies or the lack of them make everyday life not just more difficult for for the residents of West Baltimore, but makes them feel as if they are living under an authoritarian regime.

Michael Sierra-Arevalo (PhD candidate in Sociology) writes in “Going Beyond the Burning” about the long history of mutual distrust and fear between police and communities of color. He points to new developments and programs that strive to reconcile the two.
